In what is set to be a welcome addition to the Barangaroo ‘hood, the heritage-listed Sussex Hotel just opened its stunning rooftop terrace to the public for the first time since being taken over by Sonenco Hotels (St Leonard’s Tavern and Gilroys Hotel) back in 2008.
Adding to The Sussex Hotel’s existing ground floor pub and beer garden, the new rooftop space offers a serene sanctuary, perched above the bustle of Barangaroo, where Sydneysiders can relish the warmth of the summer sun with a signature cocktail in hand and a selection of meze-style dishes.
Executive Chef Anthony Ornela translates the lush green aesthetic of the rooftop garden into a fresh and flavourful food menu of share-style small plates, salads, kebabs and larger plates that pair perfectly with lunches in the sun, through to dinner under the stars. Small plates like the Spiced chicken wings with date barbecue sauce are perfectly balanced with refreshing cocktails such as the signature La Vida featuring Rosa Gin, grapefruit, rose water and aquafaba.
Other matches made in culinary heaven include grilled swordfish skewers with chermoula, fennel, preserved lemon salad and caper dressing devoured alongside a full-bodied glass of white from the expertly truncated wine list.
Designed by Emilie Delalande from Studio Etic who brought to life nearby Barangaroo House, the fit-out showcases an abundance of greenery set against soft white plaster walls and silver travertine tiles offering a welcoming respite from the signature Barangaroo gloss.
